SWINDON Town fans were met with a heavy police presence, as the Robins played local rivals Newport County.

Officers and police dogs escorted Swindon fans from Newport town centre to the stadium on Saturday.

The South Wales Argus reported that there was little trouble, other than some shouting from the visiting fans.

The match, which Swindon Town lost 2-1, followed a clash at the County Ground last November.

Newport County fans came away from that match in high spirits, after their team beat the Robins 1-0.

But police were forced to drive riot vans towards large groups of Newport County fans.as scuffles broke out near Swindon Railway Station.

County fans said they had been surprised by the heavy police presence.
One man, 48, said: “They don’t normally get any trouble from us.”
