A FORMER goalkeeper who was famous for eating pies on the touchline at football games has joined forces with a Bradford on Avon’s Eat Square to make a new range of pies.

Wayne Shaw, fondly nicknamed the Roly Poly Goalie, has worked with Eat Square founder Alex Joll to develop three different pies – classic steak, steak and cheese and chicken Balti.

Now the Roly Poly Goalie Pies are available for all.

Mr Joll said: “They taste great. Wayne was really happy with how they turned out and he has been selling them at his food place at AFC Totton, near Southampton.

“A friend of mine who I went to school with knows Wayne and he mentioned my pie firm and it led on from there in the winter. He was very keen to get on board and I am glad he did.

“We had quite a few test runs and iterations before coming up with the three flavours – the classic steak is Wayne’s favourite.”

Mr Shaw said: “I like family run businesses and local ones too; so Eat Square was a great choice. The development process has been a little long but worth it as I think we now have the best steak pie on the market.

“I am looking forward to promoting Roly Poly Goalie Pies and seeing them in clubs North, South East and West.”

The former Sutton United goalkeeper Wayne Shaw was charged with breaching betting rules after eating a pie live on television. He ate the pasty in the dugout towards the end of FA Cup match after a bookmaker had offered odds of 8/1 on him doing so. He was banned from the sport for a year.

These pies are part of a wholesale range from Eat Square and available through www.wholesalepies.co.uk
