MAKESHIFT fire engines, tanks, carts and converted wheelie bins lined up in Trowbridge for the town's annual soapbox derby.

Nearly two dozen entrants brought their soapbox creations to the grid to race down Castle Street.

There were a few spills and thrills, including racer Zak Gale, who managed to finish the race, despite losing his tyres. This earned him the Who needs Tyres award.

Carnival committee member Andy Baker said: "We had a fantastic event. From the comments we received on the day everyone who took part had a great time and enjoined every moment.

"The spectators were getting involved with cheers of support and encouragement. We especially thank all of the competitors and spectators for there support and look forward to seeing you all again in 2019, so get building."

The winner of the 16+ race was Paul Gregory, Jai Whiteford won the 12-15 race, Caleb Davis came first in the seven-11 race and Orlaith Gregory won the under 7 race.

Simon Williams won the I bounce Well accolade, as he crashed many times but kept going, and Ashley Gregory won the Best Pusher prize, as he pushed several soap boxes.

One Harry Potter soapbox won the Survivor award for repeated use and a family from Surrey, who have raced here for around a decade, got an award for their continued support.

This year's event, on August 19, was run by the Trowbridge Carnival Committee and was sponsored by Hire Standard in Westbury.
