IT has to be said that nowhere in Wiltshire quite does carnival like the village of Pewsey.

Four years ago the wheelbeero race had to change its name to the more sedate wheelbarrow race after changes to licensing legislation meant there was a clampdown on beer drinking.

It was feared by some that this might take away some of the fun from the night which apart from the carnival procession itself is the biggest draw.

But the event has retained its popularity and on Thursday evening teams in fancy dress of all descriptions kept the tradition going but instead of each competitor in the three-person team sinking a pint at each drink station they had to take it in turns.

Carnival member Dave Humfress said: "It was a fantastic evening. People had really made an effort with their costumes. There was a tremendous atmosphere but the weather got worse as the evening went on and so most people went home soon after the race was finished."
