THE Christie Miller sports centre in Melksham is to close its doors today (FridayOctober 19) for the last time.

The centre in Lancaster Way, Bowerhill, occupies an old 1940s-built building and operates a gymnasium, a main sports hall and squash courts.

Staff were informed of the closure plans in September. It is planned to redeploy some to other nearby centres.

The closure leaves Melksham with no sports hall provision until new facilities are built by 2021 as part of the £23 million community campus.

Some staff have been redeployed to other Places for People leisure centres in Melksham, Bradford on Avon, Chippenham and Trowbridge.

Groups that use the centre have moved to other centres and halls elsewhere.

Existing memberships have been transferred to Melksham Blue Pool.

Adult premium members can use facilities at any other Wiltshire Council sites.
