STRATTON will mark the centenary of the end of the First World War with a tree-planting event.

Volunteers from the community will help to plant a whopping 1,000 trees at Dorcan Field on November 10 from 10am to 1pm.

The Poppy Parachute Team will be dropping in with a special display at 10.15 and deliver a few trees themselves.

Guests who would like to be part of the tree-planting are advised to bring a spade and some gloves.

Parking is available in the car park on Greenbridge Road, next to Swindon Rugby Club.

The event has been organised by Stratton St Margaret Parish Council by open spaces manager Oliver Saunders and Coun Roger Smith.

Mr Saunders: “It was always my intention to plant trees in this field and when I realised the centenary anniversary was coming up, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity.

“Lots of people have said they’d like to be involved so hopefully they’ll all turn up.

“The parachute team were really keen to be part of this when we asked them, which is great.”

On Remembrance Sunday itself, there will be a service at St Margaret’s Church at 10.30am.

Councillors will attend the service and the chairman, Coun Stuart Leach, will lay a wreath after it ends.

Light refreshments will be served at Grange Leisure following the service.

A peace service will then be held at the parish’s Peace Memorial from 3pm.
