As Christmas begins to draw near there’s plenty of Christmas light events to choose from in and around Swindon.

Here’s all you need to know about the main event and those in the surrounding areas.

When and where?

The Big Christmas Switch-on in Swindon town centre is at Wharf Green on Saturday November 17. X Factor star Jahmene Douglas will switch the lights on at 5pm.

On November 25 Old Town will have its own switch-on at 5pm on Wood Street.

What entertainment will there be?

Jahmene will be joined by The Voice Kids finalist Lilia Slattery and the headliner for the event, rapper Tinchy Stryder, who will perform at 5.45pm after the other acts. There will also be fireworks, depending on the weather.

Lilia will also be giving those in Highworth a show.

What else can the crowds expect?

InSwindon Bid who are putting on the event in Swindon are also launching the Festival of Lights at the same time, creating a trail of magical Christmas lights, including a giant interactive teddy bear, a LED waterfall on Theatre Square, and a sparkling 20ft Christmas tree on Regent Circus.

There will also be a pop-up Christmas artisan market on the same day from 10am til 7pm and a Santa’s Grotto with Christmas characters and elves.

Where can I park?

The closest car park to the Swindon switch-on will be the Brunel West and North ones. If those get full there are large car parks within a five minute walking distance at Regent Circus and The Parade.

It will cost £2 if you park before 6pm to stay for a maximum of four hours.

ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT

When and where?

The Royal Wootton Bassett Christmas light switch-on on the High Street is on Friday November 30, lights go on at 6pm. The event lasts until 8pm.

What entertainment will there be?

Royal Wootton Bassett is yet to the release the line-up of performers for this year’s event so people will have to wait and see.

What else can the crowds expect?

In Royal Wootton Bassett the High Street will be lined with 48 stalls, there will be fire eaters, fairground rides, and a Santa’s grotto.

Expect large crowds, the much-anticipated event attracts between 8,000 and 10,000 people a year.

Where can I park?

Motorists going to Royal Wootton Bassett can park in the Borough Fields Sainsbury’s car park, which has 255 spaces, is open 8am-6pm, and charges £2.70 for up to four hours.

Part of the High Street will be closed from Station Road down to the Coxtalls roundabouts on Friday between 3pm and 10pm.

CRICKLADE

When and where?

The Cricklade Christmas lights event and children’s lantern parade happens on Saturday December 1 from 5.15pm on Cricklade High Street.

What entertainment will there be?

The Cricklade Christmas switch-on will include a carol service, live performances from Britain’s Got Talent star Dizzy Twilight who will be putting on a disco at 5.30pm, and The Cricklade Band.

The carol service is starting at 6.15pm. Father Christmas will then make a special appearance with his reindeer at around 6.30pm.

What else can the crowds expect?The festivities in Cricklade will start at St Sampson’s Church who will be holding a Christmas Tree Festival during the day.

The free festival starts at 10am on Saturday morning and will see 30 trees decorated by various local businesses to represent individual Christmas carols.

Further entertainment will consist of poetry readings, carol singing, and additional activities for children.

Where can I park?

Parking is free for two hours at Cricklade Town Hall.

HIGHWORTH

When and where?

Highworth’s Christmas lights will go live at 5pm on November 30 on Market Square.

What else can the crowds expect?

There will be a Christmas fayre selling crafts, food and drink, and gifts in St Michael’s Church as well as funfair rides for children.

Where can I park?

There are three car parks close to Highworth’s High Street within walking distance to Market Square.
