A DOZEN more Swindon schools will be recruited to a young carer scheme next year.

Swindon Carers Centre say it is being made possible by a £148,000 lottery grant, which will help them create and deliver a new carer champion award scheme with schools in the town.

The award is given to schools that best support those pupils who are also responsible for looking after a family member or friend. New funding from the Big Lottery Fund means the programme can run for another three years.

Susanna Jones, chief executive at town centre-based Swindon Carers Centre, said: “We are very excited about utilising the expertise young carers in Swindon have to further develop a clear voice for other young carers here. This will be so positive in influencing the support available to them.

"A big thank you to the Big Lottery Fund for investing in this project following the huge success of the Young Carer Award over the past three years."

She added the charity was delighted to be able to continue the scheme and thanked the schools already supporting young carers.
