YOUNG people in Swindon are being given an exciting chance to reach their potential - and it’s thanks to the passion and dedication of a man who says street dance transformed his life.

Richard Whyburd-Lane set up Swindon Academy of Street Dance with his partner Megan O’Driscoll four months ago.

He says street dance has had a big impact on his life, and now he wants to help others looking for a creative outlet.

The proud teachers who met through dancing have already seen their hard work begin to pay off after their pupils won nine trophies at the South East Street Dance Championships national competition earlier this month.

Richard who has 15 years’ experience in this industry said: “This was something we were always going to break out and do. We want to keep true to our routes, and by having creative control we can really help influence the youth in this town.

“Dance has helped me a hell of a lot over the years, it has kept me on the straight and narrow which has then built me up to believe in myself and essentially work me back into society, so I can now give back.”

The 34-year-old runs his classes four times a week at the performing arts studios in New College on Queens Drive. He has also recently set one up in Cirencester.

Dancers between the ages of three and 19 can join the school. They already have 115 students. signed up which is an achievement the owners are very proud of.

The dancing competition, hosted at the Oasis leisure centre, with performers from Slough, Cardiff and Reading travelling to Swindon to take part.

“With the school still new we were just happy to be there, we weren’t expecting to make the impact that we did,” said Richard.

Two of his performers won first place in two categories, with others placed in second and third.

Richard added: “The proof is in the pudding, we couldn’t be prouder of every one of them who went out and gave it their all. Now they are reaping the rewards from all of their hard work and time spent into perfecting their routines.

“The kids’ confidence levels are through the roof.

“We really care about what we do and we can honestly see ourselves leading the way in UK street dance.”
