VILLAGERS in Pewsey are delighted with the new bench commemorating the fallen of the Great War.
Paid for and promoted by Pewsey Parish Council the idea was originally that of Cllr Phil Stevens although the committee were as one with the concept.
The parish clerk said the residents were delighted with the bench in The Market Place with lots of very positive comments.
However, the bench didn’t arrive in time for November 11, but arrived just two days later.
Poppies with the names of those from Pewsey who died in the war were attached to fence by the bench and to the statue of King Alfred in the High Street.
The village lost 33 men during the 1914-18 war with James Pearce and William Collins both killed in the first year of the conflict.
Children from Pewsey Primary School and Pewsey Vale School planted 33 trees in the form of a cross on Pewsey Common to commemorate those from the village who died in the war.
