A LONG waiting list has meant the Christian Against Poverty Debt Centre has taken on a new debt coach to cope with high demand.

The Debt Centre, based on Lagos Street, which provides free and confidential debt counselling and advice, has said its three advisors in Swindon are booked up until February.

Geoff Naylor, CAP Debt Centre Manager, said: “It has been such a frustration to have a waiting list, particularly as many of our clients are vulnerable and need help straight away. So, it’s great to be able to offer more support for local people.”

"We still have got a waiting list until the end of February, and can currently see six new people a month."

The centre has appointed Matthew Winbow to work two days a week at the centre visiting people in need in the Eldene area.

Matt said: “I just love this area, I love Swindon, I love the Parks. My wife is from the East of Swindon and we are bringing our children up here as we love the community and the people who live here.

“From my work life, I know how difficult managing your finances can be, particularly if you’re struggling with other things like your health, a bereavement or unemployment.”

Matt said that he hoped to visit 24 new clients in the next twelve months, adding to the centres ever growing capacity.

Fellow coaches Geoff, Tom Price and Matt visit every client in their own home, working with each person with the aim of helping them become debt free.

Meanwhile CAP’s head office specialists negotiate with creditors, create a budget and provide ongoing technical support.

Matt said: “Our help is free. If you know things are out of control and you’re stressed, missing meals and not sleeping, please give us a call and let us help you get your life back on track.”
