EAST Wichel is to get its first food store - 10 years after the first homes in the south Swindon community went on the market.

The new Midcounties Co-operative Food store will open next Thursday on Staldon Court, off East Wichel Way.Bosses have poured £550,000 into the store, with 15 new jobs created.

Jeanette Timmins, store manager, said: “Our new store has a huge range of fantastic products as well as a really strong team, and we’re looking forward to meeting all our new customers at the celebration event on January 24.

“As a Co-operative, sustainability is a key focus for us and the new store has various eco-friendly credentials as well as a delicious range of products made locally, helping our customers to cut down their food miles and support businesses in their community.”

Nick Burns-Howell, a parish councillor for the area, added: “It is fantastic news that this long awaited, and much needed, local amenity is opening in East Wichel."

Currently, the area's closest food shop is Waitrose on Mill Lane.
