A RARE navigation aid which was used on ships in the Victorian times is on display at a Trowbridge antique shop.

A dealer in Church Street has the piece of equipment, known as a binnacle, on display outside the front of the shop. The binnacle would have had a compass to help ships navigate during the 19th century.

Shop owner Mike Lojko said: “The Victorian binnacle has received lots of interest from my customers.

“Everyone who sees it asks me what is is and what it was used for.

“One customer even told me a bit more about its history.”

The binnacle ship navigation system is on sale for £1,600.

Mr Lojko added: “If the compass was still in the binnacle it would be worth a lot more. The compass alone would be worth about £2,000.

“However, I think it would look great with two round tables on either side in a boat-themed bar or something similar. It’s a great conversation piece and is in great condition.”
