A 78-YEAR-OLD woman has died after a car accident last night near Marlborough.

Police said the woman died in the crash near Lockeridge when her car was in collision with a VW Passat on minor road.

Police said in a statement: "The incident happened at approximately 6.20pm on an unclassified road between Lockeridge and Alton Barnes and five miles south west of Marlborough.

"The woman, who is from Marlborough, was driving her Ford Fiesta north towards the A4, and for reasons currently unknown, drifted into the path of a Volkswagen Passat which was travelling south.

"The woman sadly died at the scene.

Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.

"The driver of the Volkswagen, a 39-year-old man from Swindon, suffered a broken leg and a wrist injury.

His three-year-old daughter also suffered a broken leg."

Police confirmed that both victims were taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon by ambulance.

They said: "We’d like to appeal for anyone who may have seen the Ford Fiesta prior to the collision, or anyone who witnessed the collision itself to call police on 101 and quote log number 275 of 6 January.

" In addition to this, we would urge anyone with dash cam footage to get in touch."

The road linking the villages of Lockeridge and Alton Barnes passes open countryside including the Pewsey Downs connecting Fyfield and Woodborough.

The death is the third fatal road traffic accident in the area in the last six weeks.

A man died on the A4361 north of Avebury on December 1, when there was a two car accident on a bend in the village of Winterbourne Bassett,

While in Pewsey on December 16, an 83-year-old died when riding a mobility scooter in Church Street when he was in collision with a car.
