GIRL footballers from a small primary school near Devizes are celebrating after winning the county title against many bigger schools from all over Wiltshire including Swindon.

Sports teacher Debbie Alvis was proud that Five Lanes, which has sites in both Potterne and Worton, was able to take the cup and will now represent Wiltshire in the south west area competition.

She said: "We were by far the smallest school in the competition, but they were big in terms of determination and team spirit.

"After qualifying, without conceding a goal, last month in the Devizes area qualifiers they had been working hard to up their game for the County Finals which took place at Stanley Park in Chippenham.

"Teams from across the county and Swindon played in two pools, and Five Lanes had to show real resilience to secure a place in the semi-finals.

"A 1-0 win led them into a final with Shaw Ridge, who had previously beaten them in the group stages."

The match went to penalties and Five Lanes took the title. Mrs Alvis, who is also assistant head teacher, said: "There was elation for the girls and adults alike."
