A CHARITY stall at Royal Wootton Bassett Flower Club in 2018 yielded £500 for Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Dennis Davies, a volunteer from the charity, thanked members for their support when he received the cheque at the club AGM last week, at the Memorial Hall.

Mr Davies spoke about the important role of the air ambulance in the community, and its ability to reach any casualty within 11 minutes, for emergency treatment on site, and speedy transfer to hospital.

The Flower Club has enjoyed another successful year, with some excellent demonstrations that cost between £250 and £300 each. Affiliation to NAFAS, the national body, costs £8.35 per member which is included in the annual subscription of £35. (You may pay £7 per meeting, as a visitor.)

Annual reports recalled the club's well-supported programme of events, including floral art demonstrations, practical classes, some superb outings, social functions and participation in local attractions.

The business meeting was followed by refreshments and a Dressability demonstration by Sharon Tombs. She revealed the immense benefits offered at low cost by this unique charitable organisation, founded 20 years ago. Its highly skilled dressmakers adapt clothing for people who have specialist physical needs. She displayed a selection of garments for needy adults and children. There were some very attractive garments, including a beautiful fancy dress outfit for a child who has a terminal illness.

The charity, with seven part-time staff and 20 volunteers costs £80,000 annually, and benefits from donations, fund-raising and grants, as well as contributions from those who benefit. They also provide aprons for the Olive Tree Café, shopping bags and also blankets for homeless people

Sharon said: "A lot of our work promotes dignity and self-respect. As far as we know, we are the only charity of its kind in the UK. Dressability, based in Westmead Drive, Swindon, has a team of highly skilled dressmakers and can advise on individual requirements. The charity's positive slogan is: "Don't compromise on style. Make your clothes work for you."
