THE Calne Lions aim to raise £17,500 to buy a new blood bike for life-saving volunteer group the Freewheelers.
The Freewheelers provide a free service to the NHS, funded entirely by public donation and sponsorship, and they transport blood, pathology and microbiology specimens, patient notes, X-rays, breast milk, and other medical supplies by motorbike.
Calne Lions member Phil Viles encountered the group at the Bike Meet in Calne - and was so impressed by their work that he suggested to Lions president Martin Bright they raise the money for a new bike.
"It's such a worthwhile cause to be raising money for," said Rachel Viles.
The Lions' Santas in Your Street Christmas collection raised £8323 towards the target, and next is a fund-raising ball on Friday March 29 at Wellington Barn, in Calstone, from 6.30pm to midnight. Expect a night of good food, dancing and money raising for the cause. Tickets cost £45. Email bikedinnerlions@yahoo.com.
