HUNDREDS of children were put through their paces at a bootcamp aimed at youngsters in Devizes.

Former military physical training instructor Greg Townson was in charge for the free event in Hillworth Park provided by Devizes Town Council.

Mr Townson kept around 400 children occupied last Wednesday with obstacle courses, cargo nets and old tyres.

Town council direct services manager Sarah Williams said: "Greg Townson from Townson Training arrived at the park with a van full of kit to make a huge obstacle course on the main lawn, complete with cargo net, tyres, cones and large dice.

"More than 400 children took part in the course and also tried out some exercises including sit-ups and press-ups.

"I was delighted with the turnout and also with the fact that the event attracted lots of families who have never been to the park before."

Mr Townson said he was delighted that so many children wanted to take part and was pleased he could show them the fun side of fitness.

The father of two said: "I am passionate about making fitness fun for all ages." He hopes to hold more sessions in the park aimed at children.

The bootcamp session replaced half-term pancake races as this year Shrove Tuesday is not until March 5 and so did not coincide with half-term.

Mr Townson runs bootcamp sessions for people of all ages. He said: "Our bootcampers come from all walks of life, from complete beginners and mums looking to get back into fitness, to runners training for ultra marathons.

"Although bootcamp sessions are challenging, they’re designed so everyone can work within their abilities."

He is now also working with a number of schools.
