NEW residents are picking up their keys and moving into brand new homes a year after GreenSquare’s regeneration work began at Woodroffe Square in Calne.

Wind and rain on moving day failed to dampen spirits as people moved in to their new abodes on February 8. Couple Louise Edginton and Darren Whiting moved in with their two children from a flat in Bodinnar House in Calne.

Louise said: “The move was good, we still have a lot of unpacking to do! It’s a nice house, the kids have a garden now which we didn’t have in the flat. It’s a quieter area too so we’ve been able to get them into a bedtime routine.”

The project began with the demolition of garages and houses numbered 49 to 60 in Woodroffe Square to make way for 24 new homes, with parking and outside space. The new homes - nine flats and 15 houses - are available for affordable rent and some shared ownership.

Also collecting her keys was Rachel Wootten, a returning resident. Her house in Woodroffe was demolished as part of the regeneration plans. She and her teenage son have been living in a nearby property in the town during the development work.

Speaking on the day she said: “I’ve lived in Calne all my life, and had been in my previous house here for over 13 years. There wasn’t really enough space and it was very old.

"I have been looking forward to moving in and have all my boxes ready. It will be nice to have a fresh start in a new home.”

Tom Chapman-Young, regeneration officer for GreenSquare said: “The regeneration of Woodroffe Square has been an exciting project and we are pleased to be welcoming families into their new homes. For the residents returning back to the scheme it has been a pleasure working with them and supporting them through this process.”

The project should be completed by the summer and the remaining properties ready for residents.
