JAMES Gray MP has welcomed the rejection of a controversial plan to build 300 homes near Royal Wootton Bassett.

The MP for North Wiltshire said the rejection of the Marsh Farm site, which would also include a Lidl store, by Wiltshire council and the government's planning inspectorate in January was good for the town.

In an address to the town council he wrote: "I have always believed that we have wonderful high streets in Wiltshire and therefore am pleased at this rejection which will prevent the town being dominated by superstores.

"Also, I believe that whilst there was support for new homes and facilities there also needs be the infrastructure in place to support these new developments. It's important we find the right balance."

The bid by Leda Properties received hundreds of objection letters when it was unveiled in 2014.

Last month Lidl reaffirmed its commitment to work on developing the greenfield site north of the town.
