A 24-YEAR-OLD motorist from Swindon fought officers and ran off before being caught and arrested for possessing class A drugs and obstructing police.

Wiltshire Police responded to a report of a strong smell of cannabis coming from a vehicle near Swindon just before 7pm yesterday evening.

Officers found the vehicle and followed it to an Esso petrol station in Chiseldon, then detained a 24-year-old-man. The suspect pushed a police officer against a vehicle so hard it caused damage to the bumper, then tried to flee.

After a short pursuit, police arrested him on suspicion of possession of a Class A drug, concerned in the supply of class A drugs, criminal damage and obstructing police in the execution of their duty.

They found around £500 in cash and a packet of white powder in his vehicle. The suspect is in custody at Gablecross for further questioning.

Superintendent Adrian Burt said: "This case highlights the importance of community intelligence. We rely on members of the public to act as our eyes and ears and inform us of any suspicious behaviour or vehicles, so that we can take appropriate action.

"Fortunately, the officer involved in this incident was not injured, however, this kind of behaviour and disrespect will not be tolerated."

To report suspected drug activity in the area, call 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
