A BRIDGE will be making its way across the county on Friday.

Police have warned motorists that the abnormally large load may result in delays in the county around lunchtime.

The steel structure, almost five metres wide, is due to leave J17 of the M4 at Chippenham at 11am and travel via the A350 through Chippenham, Melksham and Trowbridge before heading onto the B3097 around Yarnbrook before arriving at its final destination in Brook Lane, Westbury.

A Wiltshire Police spokeswoman said: "Due to its size, the load will be both slow moving and have the potential to cause congestion in places where oncoming traffic will be required to pull in and wait for the packet to pass. Traffic travelling behind the move will not be able to overtake."

The force asked drivers to be patient, suggesting people should allow extra time for their journey.

Off-duty police officers accompanying the wide load are being paid by the haulier.
