SWINDON Lions Club is encouraging people to join it to help promote good mental health.

The incoming president spoke out as part of the Adver's campaign to raise awareness of Mental Health Month, which runs through May.

“Joining a club is a great way to boost your mental health,” said Maurice Watson, who takes the presidency from July this year.

“It keeps you active and involved with the community, and keeps your mind away from other things,” he said.

“Meeting people, communicating with them, this all helps those who suffer from mental health problems to express themselves and stop them being drawn in.

“If you are in this situation it is important not to isolate yourself,” he added.

The 17-strong club has been in Swindon for 55 years and during this time has raised over £400,000 for local good causes.

The Lions aim to help disadvantaged people in the community by raising funds for local charities and good causes.

Members come from all walks of life and the club is keen for anyone who might be interested to get in contact.

“It’s a lovely community, everyone supports each other,” said Mr Watson who has been a member of the Lions for the last 25 years. “I’ve made many friends who I wouldn’t have been able to meet but for the lions,” Mr Watson added.

The club holds social and fundraising activities throughout the year and visits France for an exchange with its twin club in Normandy.

“It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and get to know a new area,” said Mr Watson.

Club nights are held at the Village Hotel, Shaw Ridge, Swindon at 8pm on the first and third Monday in the month.

The group often helps people who require support with their mental health through its welfare fund. The next fundraising for this will be a fish and chip supper on July 13 in Christ Church Hall in Old Town.
