JULIA Bishop will be the Mayor of Highworth for another year after winning the majority vote from fellow councillors.

Councillors voted for Coun Bishop to retain her mayoral position at an annual council meeting and rejected Coun Keith Smith's push to elect Coun Paul Newton-Smith for mayor.

Julia will also act as the chair for the town council, though Coun Smith proposed that the mayor and chair should be two different people.

Six councillors supported his suggestion and six councillors voted against the idea. The mayor/chair had the deciding vote and defeated the motion. After two other deadlocks broken by Coun Bishop's casting vote - one against Coun Keith Smith and one for Coun Lynn Vardy - Coun Vardy became vice chair.

Coun Bishop spent her 2018 mayoral year raising money for the Alzheimer's Society and will present the funds to the charity in early June before picking Prospect Hospice as her chosen charity for the next 12 months.
