THE boss of Arcadia Group has been asked to explain why his company opted to shut five Swindon chain stores.

It follows the announcement that the town centre branches of Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Burton, Wallis and Evans. The Topshop and Topman shop will stay open.

In a letter to Ian Grabiner, chief executive of the firm that owns the chains, South Swindon MP Robert Buckland wrote: "I was saddened and concerned to learn in the news yesterday that the Arcadia Group will be shutting five stores in Swindon. I was particularly saddened because I was not aware of any discussions or consultations taking place before this significant decision was reached.

"I am aware that commercial considerations will weigh heavily, but the number of stores set to close has alarmed me. Of particular worry is the detrimental impact that this will have on our high street and the employees."
