Wetherspoons wants to expand its pub by creating movin into a neighbouring building used by a charity.

The plans have been lodged for the Albany Palace that could leave Alzheimer’s Support without a home in Trowbridge if it wins approval.

The charity, which provides help for people living with the condition and their carers, currently rents its office space from the pub and fears it could be evicted in 2021 when its lease runs out.

The watering hole is famed for viral CCTV footage that captured a 100- man bar room brawl in 2017.

Plans show that the pub would turn the office space currently used by the charity into a space for drinkers to go and add an outside seating area.

An application for a roof terrace was withdrawn by Wetherspoons last year, but could be re submitted if the plans are approved.

Speaking on behalf of the charity, Stephany Bardzil said: “The street already has unsocial behaviour and I think this will only increase if the street is dominated by the pub. Being here is perfect for our charity, people walk past and they can pop in, we don’t want to leave Trowbridge, we’ve been here for 30 years next year.”

CEO of the charity Babs Harris added: “The carefully tended sensory garden will remain as the only non-public house space on the street. Visitors may be too intimidated to enjoy the currently tranquil space and the litter will find its way into the gardens.”

Angela Milroy is a volunteer at the sensory garden, that is run opposite the pub on Park Road. She said: “If the pub gains that extra space we worry about people drinking along that whole street. We have worked hard to make the sensory garden a lovely space for people and don’t want them to be put off coming to the area because of people spilling into the street from the pub.”

A decision is due to be made next week.
