A NEW LIDL at the Orbital Shopping Park has been given planning permission.

The supermarket will be set up in part of the old Homebase unit and work is due to begin on setting up shop later this month after Swindon Borough Council's planning committee gave its plans the go-ahead.

Lidl UK’s regional head of property Glen Stidever said: “We could not be more delighted to have received planning permission and look forward to commencing work on our new store very soon.

"I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the local community for their continued support, and very much look forward to opening our doors and offering our fresh, quality, great value products in the not too distant future.”

Lidl confirmed that it has exchanged contracts with British Land on a unit within the retail park.

The supermarket chain aims to open its newest Swindon branch, which includes an in-store bakery and customer toilet, by early next year and plans to create up to 40 jobs.

The planned store will add to Lidl’s 760 shops and will form part of the company’s growth plans which will see it open up to 50 new stores a year.
