MORE than £2,000 has been raised for village organisations and charities at this year's Codford Village Fete, which organisers have hailed as one of the best ever.
Over 700 residents and visitors attended the fete on Saturday June 15 at the Codford Village Hall and playing field.
Crispin Edmonds, chairman of the Codford Village Fete committee, said: “It has been one of the best ever.
“We had a slight shower during the afternoon, but it didn’t appear to dampen any spirits and the fete this year has been really successful.
“The local spirit in this village is really good and people have rallied round. I think that this year we have put on a really good show.”
Villager Emma Howe said: “Last year, it was very hot but despite the weather this year we have had more fun. It has been better than last year.”
Building on the success of the last few years, this year’s expanded event featured show-ring displays by heavy horses from Monmouthshire, a fun dog show organised by Celia Callan, and performances by the Warminster Brass Brand and the Wylye Voices choir.
In addition, there were displays by Alex the mobile magician, vintage hair dressing, face painting and tug of war competitions between residents of Codford St Peter and Codford St Mary which ended in a 2-2 draw.
A skittles competition earlier in the week between the two sides ended in an emphatic win for Codford St Peter.
Springfields Nursery, Codford Honey, and the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, as well as the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, all had stand stall displays.
Traditional games included darts, hook a duck, and a wet sponge stocks, as well as a duck race in the Chitterne Brook.
Food and refreshments included a Club BBQ with sizzling locally-made sausages and burgers.There was also an ice cream van and other stalls sold sweets and candy floss, as well as food and soft drinks.
Alcoholic drinks were also available at the bar inside the Village Hall and outside at the gin and cider stalls.
Later, residents danced to the Frome Big Band and DJ Farmski in the Village Hall.
