MOTORISTS driving through the centre of Devizes may be forgiven for taking their eyes off the road for a few seconds when they encounter a roundabout with a difference.

For the junction of Nursteed Road and Southbroom Road has been brought to life thanks to a competition organised by Devizes In Bloom.

Schools have created incredible displays to match the theme SOS 4 Bugs and Beez. Schools across the town have come up with weird and wonderful ways to show the importance of keeping habitat for all types of creepy crawlies.

Devizes Mayor Judy Rose was delighted by what she saw when she stopped by for an inspection on Monday.

Zena Robson chairman of Devizes In Bloom is in the midst of a busy time as the roundabout display was created just before the town's open garden weekend, the town's floral trail and the start of the In Bloom contest for homeowners and businesses.

She said: "All of the events this year highlight the huge decline in the insect population that has been taking place over the past 50 years.

"Businesses have also been asked to dress their windows in June to support the theme and we are also asking pubs and hotels to use their garden spaces.

“Schools have created mini gardens on old pallets decorated with pollinating insects. All entries are now displayed on the roundabout by The Greens and will be judged by the Mayor at the end of June.”

In July the town’s Devizes In Bloom competitions will be run in a large variety of but entries are about to close.

Cllr Rose has also been promoting yarn bombing to make the railing outside the Assize Court look prettier. Last year a group set up by Chrissie the wife of then mayor Andy Geddes led a group that met in the Mayor's Parlour at the town hall to knit poppies for Remembrance Day tributes.

Now they have turned their focus on making flowers for the railings and are inviting others to contribute.
