With scaffolding covering its back wall, The Savoy pub in the town centre is keen to make sure people know it is still in business

The Wetherspoons establishment, which occupies an old Art Deco cinema building in Regent Street, has put up banners on its back wall saying: "We’re still open".

Two similar banners have been put up in the alleyway between Regent Street and the Wyvern Theatre car park behind it.

The scaffolding at the back of the building has been put up to allow a huge new pub sign sign to be put up facing the car park.

Swindon Borough Council has just been given permission to knock down the two empty shop units nearby at 36 and 37 Regent Street, just a few yards from the pub’s frontage.

It says it is doing so in order to create a better, more attractive route to what it hopes to construct there as a ‘cultural quarter’, with a bigger theatre and new space for the Art Gallery and Museum.
