ADVER stories this week in 1959 reflected a town and a country between technological and cultural eras.

Some stories, such as a child receiving an award from a wholesome youth organisation and a new pub opening, wouldn’t have seemed out of place in any edition of the paper from the previous 30 years or so.

Others, notably the continued carnage on the roads and the arrival of a shiny new aircraft at RAF Lyneham, were very much of their time.

The same can be said of the advert for a portable television.
