WHEN the George Lane Police Station in Marlborough closes in a cost cutting exercise the officers will work out of a much smaller building.

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire and Swindon, Angus Macpherson, has received change of use consent to use Corner House in the George Street Car Park.

Work began to renovate the property this week the police call a ‘touch down point’ which should be ready by late September.

Wiltshire Police decided the current station was regarded as "no longer meeting the operational needs of the Force."

The current site is used for specialist services which will move to Gablecross in Swindon.

The Corner House will have an interview room, part-time front counter service and officers and basic facilities.

Mr Macpherson said: “I am seeking to reduce the cost of the Wiltshire Police estate by 20 per cent by 2021. "

He said the move and closure of the old station will save £60,000 a year, the equivalent of two police officers.
