THE National Trust team at Stourhead in Wiltshire has launched new activities for the whole family to enjoy over the summer holidays.

There is always something to discover at Stourhead, whether it’s a treasure in the house, the view across the lake or finding the perfect picnic spot.

This summer the estate features a visit every Saturday from the Great Big Tree Climbing Company, helping people scale the canopies of some of the giant trees. Or they can try playing new life-sized board game Bank or Bust or join the crafty drop-in sessions on weekdays.

The thrill of experiencing the world-famous landscape from up high with the Great Big Tree Climbing Company is suitable for all over the age of six. Pre-bookable online, it costs £20 per climb including entry for one child and accompanying adult. Expert instructors share tips and tricks on the best way to climb into the treetops amongst some of the estate’s tallest specimens.

The Bank or Bust board game channels the bravery of Stourhead’s creators, the Hoare family and the investments they made in the South Sea Company. Perfect for groups (£1 per player), the aim is to get rich quick by “buying up” favourite parts of Stourhead’s 18th-century landscape garden, competing in crazy challenges to be crowned winner.

Family craft workshops are being held in the Stableyard under a shady tent. You can make insect homes and birdfeeders (£1 per craft) to take home for your own garden, using natural and recycled materials such as egg boxes and cans.

“This summer there is so much taking place for families to enjoy whatever the weather,” said Kirsty Large, Visitor Experience Officer.

“We’re especially excited to be working with the Great Big Tree Climbing Company, letting visitors really explore one of our trees, offering a real adventure and completely different experience in the garden.”

There are also the National Trust’s 50 things to do before you’re 11¾’activities to have a go at including building a den, making a trail with sticks, climbing a huge hill, and running around in the rain. The activity charts help families engage with the nature around them and challenge themselves to see how many of the activities they can complete over the summer.

There are plenty of places to play games such as hide-and-seek, as well as to relax and enjoy a picnic in the landscape garden this summer.
