Praise for Wiltshire Council over its decision to install a solar powered parking machine in Devizes Market Place has been short lived.
Last week the council said it had listened to the views of drivers and decided not to limit payment to App only.
The new machine was due to come into force on Thursday but it was quickly found it was not working.
A Wiltshire Council spokesman said today: "We’re hopeful the new machine will be up and running this week, we apologise for any inconvenience caused. In the meantime, people are able to pay on their mobile phone via MiPermit."
The council has not explained what has gone wrong and many people have taken to social media to complain.
Wiltshire Council is now charging 70p for the first hour and £1.30 for two hours.
Devizes Town Council is consulting until the end of August about two option for the layout of the Market Place and a survey is available on line on the town council website.
