One way to help the council tackle climate change is to make your views known during its local plan review.

Planning and development, where houses go, how they are constructed, how transport networks are designed, can have a major effect on climate change and sustainability.

The borough council is conducting a two-month consultation into its review of its local plan, a legal document which sets out its vision for how the town develops and grows up to the year 2036.

Andrew Knight said: “I’m sure councillors and officers would want to hear from as many people as possible.

“This is a chance to express to the council what you’d like to see it putting into its planning policies.”

Labour councillor Jane Milner-Barry is also keen to see climate change and sustainability being brought to the foreground in the local plan.

She said: “The instructions form central government are that we should use the local plan to make significant practical measures to address climate change, and to make radical reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

“I don’t think the new draft plan is doing that, and I think it needs to do more.”

The consultation period runs until Monday, September 23.
