Swindon has been given £25m boost to revamp the town centre.

It was one of 100 towns and cities to receive part of a £3.6bn government pot.

The move has been praised by Conservative councillors and MPs, but Labour politicians say it is just a political stunt from prime minister Boris Johnson.

Coun Dale Heenan, borough council’s cabinet member for the town centre, said: “Swindon has 25 million reasons to say thank you to the government and our MPs with this new announcement.

“I know a large part is down to Robert Buckland proactively making the town’s case.

“I think this money could be a catalyst to unlocking further private sector investment and help bring all our projects together.

“It could have a large transformative impact. It is crucial that no-one wastes it or splashes the cash on a fanciful idea.”

The council could not say what the money would be specifically spent on, only saying it was still waiting for further details from the government.

Both Swindon MPs praised the funding with Robert Buckland, South Swindon MP and justice secretary, saying: "Both Justin and I pressed for Swindon to be included in this new initiative by a Conservative government that is working to level-up opportunities.

“This gives Swindon access to a new fund for the development of local infrastructure projects.”

Justin Tomlinson added: “This is a real boost for Swindon’s ambitious economic plans, helping to unlock further investment and growth.

“The Conservative government again backs Swindon in response to myself, Robert, the council and the local business community working together to champion our town.”

But Labour councillors have branded the move a political stunt by the opposition party as a general election looms.

Coun Jim Grant, leader of the Labour group, said: “Firstly, I welcome any new investment into Swindon, whether that be from the government or the private sector.

“However, it is clear this is just a pre-election announcement designed to win votes in marginal constituencies.

“If Boris remains prime minister after the next election, this £3.6bn deprived towns fund will never see the light of day.

“Boris will be too busy wrecking the economy with a no-deal Brexit and prioritising tax cuts for the wealthiest, his two key pledges during the Conservative leadership campaign.”

Coun James Robbins, spokesperson for economic development and strategic planning, agreed, saying: “We always welcome investment, it will be a benefit to the town and we hope that we can use it wisely.

“This is a clear focus on marginalised seats.

“However, we are delighted to see that the Conservatives are worried that Robert Buckland will struggle this election.

“We look forward to spending the money and for Sarah Church and South Swindon Labour to win the election.”

Shoppers in Swindon told the Adver what they would like to see the cash go on.

Sue Broadband, 50, of Walcot, said: “I’d say to put more diversity in the town. There’s not a lot of choice.”

Pauline Belletty, 52, of Covingham, said: “There should be more for the young people because you see them around the streets. There’s enough cafes and restaurants but just not enough for anyone to do.”

Cheryl Thomas, 75, of Eldene, said: “I wish there was more choice, some of the nicer shops have now closed. I wouldn’t want to see the money go into more cafés and restaurants.”

Karen Peer 78, Cricklade: “There needs to be more variety in the town, there are a few cafes and shops and that does bring people in but it’s got a bit of a sad look.”
