Bosses at Swindon Borough Council could be asked to revisit their decision not to take up the offer of wealthy businessman Laurie Marsh to work with the authority to regenerate the town centre.

Dr Marsh’s plan – named Destination Swindon – suggested the town could could a 2,000-seat conference centre at the railway station, a monorail system and even make Magic Roundabout a visitor destination.

A motion to full council next Thursday put forward by Labour councillor Bob Wright says: “This council believes that the current Conservative administration lacks a substantive cohesive plan to bring Swindon town centre into the 21st century.”

If agreed, which is unlikely given the Conservative’s five-seat majority, council leaders will be instructed “to review its decision not to work with Dr Laurie Marsh and pursue this project and the cabinet member for the town centre to bring a report to cabinet detailing how the council could enable it.”
