Voters in three areas of Swindon could be making their way to new polling stations come election time.

Members of Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet will be asked to endorse recommendations suggesting changes in Mannington and Western Ward, Ridgeway and Wroughton and Wichelstowe.

Matthew Box, the head of democracy and elections at Euclid Street has suggested the changes – if approved, voters in Wroughton will cast their votes at the Alexandra House Hotel rather than Ellendune Community Centre.

In Mannington and Western Toothill Community Centre will be used instead of Hazelwood Academy.

In Ridgeway ward a new polling district could be created for newer streets around the Great Western Hospital in the corner formed by the Marlborough Road as it turns west from the Commonhead Roundabout.

Streets to be included are Berryfield, Crofton Road, Bolehyde Close, Downs Way, Bushton Close, Marlborough Road, Chisbury Road and Rockley Close.

Voters will be asked to go to Richard Jefferies Museum.

The reason for moving the polling station from Hazelwood Academy is practical.

Mr Box said: “Although Hazelwood Academy School is happy for the council to continue to use the premises as a polling station it does need to close on polling day. An attempt is always made to use locations other than schools, due to the disruption a whole school closure creates."

Toothill Community Centre has re-opened since the last local elections in May and as it has good accessibility, plenty of parking and sufficient space for voting, officials thinks it is suitable to become a polling station once more.

The new polling station for the new homes in Badbury Park in Ridgeway ward has been proposed after fears were expressed that having to get across the very busy and fast Marlborough Road to vote in Liddington would make it more difficult for residents in the new houses – possibly disenfranchising them.

Access to Ellendune Community Centre for people in Wroughton in the Alexandra Park area was also the issue. Ward councillor Brian Ford and MP Robert Buckland said the lack of a pavement on Prior's Hill meant those voters without a car found it difficult to get to the centre.

The hotel could become the polling station for 883 voters.

The Conservative cabinet meets tonight at 6pm at the civic offices in Euclid Street. Members of the public may attend.
