HUNDREDS of people from Devizes and Marlborough joined thousands of others from around the country to continue the demand for a second Brexit referendum.

Coaches organised by Devizes for EU took the protesters to London as MPs met for what was billed as a historic day in the House of Commons but ended as a damp squib as no vote was taken on Boris Johnson’s new exit deal.

But for those who joined in the Together For The Final Say march the mood was good tempered as they took part with an array of placards, flags and banner.

Travelling with Devizes for EU was a group of students who were too young to vote in the 2016 referendum but who now want their voices to be heard.

Also on board was Paul Fairhurst from Wiltshire, a disabled person who had put a shout out for help on social media and was overwhelmed by a tsunami of support from across the UK, including a family from Devizes who accompanied him throughout the day.

Mr Fairhurst said: “Lots of us feel powerless, but we must all act. As a disabled person and father of teenagers I simply had to join the march to have my say on something that is a major threat to the future of vulnerable and young people. I felt I had to do that no matter how physically challenging the day might be.

“I’m thrilled that I did join. It was a privilege to be counted amongst a passionate, peaceful and caring crowd.

“We represented what the UK truly is and can so easily be for the future: a diverse, inclusive, compassionate, energetic, positive and talented group who achieve amazing things together.

“Johnson must ask the people ‘Do you want to leave on my deal or Remain?.’”

Kate Freeman, chair of Devizes for EU, said: “Boris Johnson needs must seek the people’s consent before he inflicts his damaging Brexit on our country.

“A letter demanding that the people are given the final say will be delivered to Downing Street, members of the Houses of Parliament and the European Parliament, and heads of government of the European Union’s member states before the ‘final’ Brexit deadline of October 31.”

“It’ll arrive before the latest ‘final’ Brexit deadline on October 31. And unlike Boris Johnson’s letter to the EU, ours will be signed!”
