Poor behaviour a drain on schools’ energy
It’s sad that Kenton Knight will have have to spend Christmas as a guest of the Queen instead of with his family.
From the Adver’s report it appears that this is a last resort on behalf of the community.
Kenton may be an extreme example of how some children and young people behave when not in school and how powerless the “authorities” are in dealing with them.
Teachers are even more powerless. If schools did not have to spend excessive amounts of teacher time and energy on behaviour, there might just be more time and energy to improve the results that the “authorities” are so keen on.

System a failure
I have sympathy for the people who have had to put up with “terror teen” Kenton Knight’s antisocial behaviour.
Too often we see people being given what amounts to yet another let off by the courts for making other people’s lives a misery.
It’s pity for him and his family that he’ll be locked up for Christmas, but maybe he and his parents should have made sure he stuck to the terms of his injunction. It’s no one’s fault but theirs.
But whether detention will get him back onto the straight and narrow is another matter.
Our prisons and probation system are in a mess and rehabilitation rates are low. Young people like him are being failed by the system as well as by those whose responsibility it is to nurture them.

A long wait
Having spent quite some time recently standing around in the ongoing delightful surrounds of Swindon bus station, it appears that the seemingly mammoth task of refurbishing the small waiting room area is still incomplete after several weeks.
Could this have been entrusted to the dynamic workforce who repaved Welling Street, I wonder...
