Discount chain Home Bargains has been praised for the decision to keep stores shut on Boxing Day.

Announced on Twitter, the company said stores would be closed to ensure staff were “able to spend time with your friends and family”.

The chain has two stores in Swindon and is set to open a third store at the old Toys R Us building near the White Hart roundabout.

Here’s what you said on Facebook:

Angie Lewis: “Good for them. No shop should be open on Boxing Day, unless the top bosses are prepared to go in and work too!”

Marie Simms: “I don’t get why shops have to open on Boxing Day.

"I am sure people can wait for the sales until December 27.

“One extra day won’t hurt. Everywhere should be closed on Boxing Day as it’s still Christmas.

“Why can’t people just enjoy the festive season without thinking about the sales.”

Steve Pearce: “Every shop should be closed on Boxing Day. One festive day off is ridiculous.”

Neil Stevens: “Everyone should have Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day off in my opinion.

“Sadly, the emergency services can’t obviously.”

Lorraine Turker: “All stores should be closed. Family units are failing due to a seven-day week.”

Emma Ellis: “Remember when all shops were shut on a Sunday, think we should go back to this.”

Pauline Puffitt: “It would be so lovely to have Boxing Day off, having worked in retail for many years, people sometimes forget that we are exhausted and have families to tend to as well.

“One day off seldom means we have time to relax or have a drink with family or friends when the prospect of a 6am alarm is always on your mind.”

Lee Hardy: “And yet the Outlet will be open from 8am until 9pm.

"Less hours are done on New Year’s Day when it’s 10am to 5pm.”

Martin Costello: “Well done, they have my custom in the future.

“It’s a disgrace that mothers and fathers who work in retail have to work on Boxing Day.

“They should be at home with family and doing things like watching rubbish on TV, eating chocolate and making a curry out of the turkey leftovers.”

Stephen Ockwell: “I applaud them for hopefully starting a trend.”

Ian Jewell: “It’s okay saying it’s disgusting that people have to work on Boxing Day.

"Yet if shoppers stopped going to the shops on Boxing Day, shops would not open.

"But the general public don’t care, they follow like sheep.

“It’s time shops and the general public thought about the workers not just their selfish self.”

Katie Webster: “I wish shops didn’t open on Boxing Day.

“Seriously, do they not make enough money in the lead up? Too much greed.”

Roxanne Sawyer: “Waitrose is also closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, one of the little reasons I’m proud to be a partner.”

Allan Hicks: “Regardless of Boxing Day closures, the distribution depots of these stores would still have to work to get goods to them for the 27.”

Sandra Edmondson: “I wouldn’t waste my time going to Home Bargains at any time of the year!”

Roderick Bluh: “Good. No shops should be open apart from fuel and convenience stores.

“Unnecessary and unfair on everyone, particularly the staff.”

Shirley Allen: “Yes definitely, people don’t need to shop on Boxing Day. Come on co-op, just close and let all your staff enjoy their time with their family, it’s so important.”
