A NEW report revealed that Swindon’s town centre is struggling to recover after a series of shop closures.

High streets across the UK were ranked based on the amount of stores closures, ATMs and the retail percentage growth.

And the research by AskTraders placed Swindon’s as the fifth worst, adding that it was in rapid decline.

Here’s what you told us on Facebook...

Johnny Rayner: “Hardly surprising, only a couple of decent stores left in the town centre. Was there for just over an hour and paid £3.40 to park . You can park for up to 5 hours at the outlet for a £1.”

Ian Cooke: “Not much difference to many other towns around the country.”

Sophie Anne Curtis: “Christmas shopping in Swindon is appalling this year - no Toys R Us , no Argos , and to forget no markets. Swindon isn’t what it used to be it used to be - a busy town with lots of shops and markets in and now there’s nothing.”

Marion Allen: “The town with no ambition.”

Ian Dumper: “Who’s to blame for high business rates, parking charges!

“Online shopping seems the way it is today, your cutting out the middleman which makes it a lot cheaper.”

Maria Phillips: “Go to the station, people are shopping just not in Swindon.”

Martyn Dickinson: “No vision, repeated promises of development, and nothing happens.

“They bring in consultants with no track record of retail development, so investors and retailers will not invest, it’s a long sorry tail but retail in Swindon is dead.

“Which company in there right mind would plough hundreds of thousands of pounds into a mew store when the local council has no forward vision for retail, it will become residential, that’s what SBC are focusing on.”

Clarissa Louise Horner: “People like me are missing out.

“I don’t do online shopping, I don’t drive, I don’t live on a bus route....

“I do live a two-min walk from the town centre , but there's not much left of the town to shop in...

“It will soon be a ghost town.”

Jennie Wolfie: “The shop owners I’ve spoken to have said it’s the high rent prices that’s the issue. They are not going to make enough money to cover their costs with less customers and there are less customers as less shops.

“Vicious circle.... reduce rent prices and it may encourage more shops. Surely even charging minimal rent for short term is better than empty shops.”

Natalie Maria Hearn: “All the shops going and yet its either £1 shops or the higher end flannels.... Great plans Swindon...... Its scary going in to town now... All the shops look deserted and run down its terrible.”

Sophie Elizabeth: “Town isn’t the best, I prefer going to bath or Bristol for shopping. I try and avoid town if I can.

“Especially as I was literally minutes after an hour and got charge £3.40. How they can justify charging that amount for hardly any shops!”

Lynne Siddall: “Try getting some more proper shop into the centre, I only ever go in to Specsavers, or the bank, nothing else to keep me in the town, and with all the bad people in there I don’t feel safe.”

Andrew Witts: “Too busy spending money on road improvements that don’t work. Knocking down the history of Swindon and building bland shopping box precincts. Zero imagination.”

Joe Robertson: “Let’s be honest. The town centre has had its day. I honestly felt like I need to hang on to my wallet today before someone tried to take it. All I saw was coffee shop after coffee shop followed by vape shop after vape shop.”
