Voters in South Swindon will get the chance to quiz the three candidates standing in their constituency in the general election.

The Adver and BBC Wiltshire are putting on a hustings event next week, which will see Conservative Robert Buckland, Labour’s Sarah Church and Liberal Democrat Stan Pajak go head to head, answering questions put to them by electors.

Members of the audience turning up to Swindon College before the recording will be able to submit questions – those selected will be put to the would-be MPs by BBC Wiltshire’s political report Dan O’Brien who will chair the evening.

After that there will be a question-and-answer session.

Editor of the Adver Pete Gavan said: “It’s great that we managed to get the candidates together for this hustings. Swindon South is a key seat as we’ve seen from the number of Conservative big names we’ve had in town over the past couple of weeks.

“This is a great chance for people to speak to the candidates directly and put them on the spot on the issues that matter to them.”

All three candidates are keen to take part. Mr Pajak, the Liberal Democrat candidate said he is looking forward to the event. “With these dark nights and people reluctant to come to the door the candidates will actually get to see people at night," he said.

The Labour candidate Ms Church said: “I do like a hustings. It gives a candidate the chance to answer the questions from the people. It’s good to actually hear from them.

“I’m glad there will be a question time element - when a member of the audience asks a question, and expects and answer that can be better than sometimes being hurried along by somebody who wants to ask the next question. The people in the audience do want to hear answers

.”

The defending Mr Buckland said: “I ook forward to taking questions from the audience. I would like to thank BBC Wiltshire and the Adver for staging this important event. I look forward to putting the Conservative case forward not just in regard to my desire to continue the work I have been doing over the past nine years as South Swindon’s member of Parliament.”

Doors open at Swindon College at 6.30pm before the start at 7.30pm on Tuesday December 3. It will be broadcast on BBC Wiltshire at 7pm on Friday, December 6.
