NEW bins are being installed in the Bowerhill area of Melksham following requests from residents concerned about littering.

Members of the Bowerhill Residents Action Group have been working with Melksham Without Parish Council, Wiltshire Council and its green spaces contractor idverde looking at sites for the new bins.

The move follows requests from BRAG members who regularly litter pick and know where the hotspots are.

Teresa Strange, of Melksham Without Parish Council, said: “The bins have been provided by Wiltshire Council with a financial contribution from Melksham Without Parish Council.

"Wiltshire Council had some additional grant funding this financial year which they used for a variety of projects, which included the provision of 100 bins across the county.

"Parish and town councils were encouraged to come forward with locations for new bins, as long as they provided a financial contribution.

"Melksham Without Parish Council worked with its community action groups to identify gaps in the provision.

"We are working with Wiltshire Council on a rolling programme of new, replacement and relocation of bins in the parish in the known litter hotspots.

"These have been installed along Falcon Way in Bowerhill, which follows the route in either direction from the Tesco Express shop, and also in Brabazon Way where the dog walkers access the variety of walks along the canal. We have contributed £50 per bin."

Councillors Richard Wood, David Pafford and Paul Carter worked with Les Finch and Wayne Robinson of idverde; Fiona Waind, the streetscene officer from Wiltshire Council, and Sheila May from BRAG, to find suitable locations and install the bins.
