THIS week we brought you the news that a shop manager in Chippenham who has had two near misses with cyclists on the pavement outside his shop this year alone is calling for a clampdown on unsafe cycling.

Steve Wall (pictured) who works at Dolmans Furnishers, on New Road, thinks the police need to do more to stop people cycling on the pavement and endangering pedestrians.

Mr Wall said he was nearly hit from behind by one cyclist on the side of the road by the shop - and the cyclist then told him to watch where he was going. He fears he may be seriously hurt if a cyclist does hurtle into him outside of the shop while he is loading a van or helping a customer.

Here is what you said on Facebook

Pat Brown: My dad was knocked down by a cyclist ,suffered a clot on the brain ,and was left a different person ,cyclists should be fined heavily for using on pavements.

Jane Halliday: They put in cycle lanes in Chippenham on busy roads and all the children cycle on the pavements regardless and the zebra crossings!

Gavin Hayden: Get the council to put an actual cycle lane in then!? That road is barely wide enough for two cars, no wonder people don’t want to cycle down it....

Sarah Cleverley Whitaker: I walked out of my mums home in Devizes and a young lad missed me by cms, he was going at some speed too with no helmet.

Claire Denton: Wait until there are more mobility scooters , that’s when the problem begins.

David Eddolls: Needs police to enforce this has been largely ignored in Bristol also.

RETIRED police officer Steve Brown, who spends weeks every year putting up Christmas lights in the front garden of his Devizes home to raise money for charity, was devastated when vandals struck.

He said: “We have been doing this for years and it brings pleasure to so many people. I was so angry when I went outside. It was really devastating and for a little while I was going to just not bother any more.”

“But then so many people told me how much the lights meant to them and offered to help and my faith in human nature was restored.”

Brenda Coupland Harte: It’s such a shame that there are people out there vandalising Christmas, but then will expect a bag of presents on Christmas day. These people need to be doing boring community service, litter picking etc.

Nicole Thompson: Probably the same vile kids that burgled an old man in Devizes last weekend! Broke in and Stole his golf clubs from his garage then dumped them in the trees nearby after they finished messing about with them! Police were not interested though ...

Tony Batchelor: So sorry to hear this. Fortunately they are a minority but it doesn’t make it any more acceptable.
