THIS week we brought you the news that homeless and lonely people have found themselves with nowhere to go on Christmas Day, as the annual festive meal hosted at County Hall has been cancelled.

People who would otherwise spend Christmas Day alone have been coming to the volunteer-led event for almost 10 years, but now organisers have said they have run into “logistical challenges”.

It was confirmed catering firm would not allow kitchens to be used without supervision

Last year saw around 250 guests come to the party to enjoy a meal on Christmas Day.

Here is what you said on Facebook:

Samantha J Mundy: So basically no one was aware, not even the service users were unaware and have nothing for Christmas!! Perhaps this could haave been said earlier to get something sorted?! Absolute disgrace.

Terry Buchanan: Typical, build up hope then at the last minute destroy it, the type of thing that gets the homeless sleeping on doorsteps because others destroy their trust in the promise that something good might happen.

Gillian Clancy: Had plenty of time to find new venue or venues.

Nads Mitchell: I know many vulnerable and homeless people really enjoyed being picked up from Chippenham and taken there - shocking that this has come to light so late in the day without any time to plan any alternatives.

Julie Colliss: Very disappointing Wiltshire Council isn’t this what we pay our taxes for to help the less fortunate why don’t Wiltshire Council cancel their Christmas do ?

Julia Marshman Bigwood: Very poor.. Why wasn’t it said earlier so people could have helped.. Pull your socks up Trowbridge.. Get yourselves sorted..

Eileen Rumble: That is such a shame.

Tom Pickford: No wonder they removed “where everyone matters” from the logo.

Adam Neil Baker: Wiltshire Council “Where no one matters”

Snacas Miller: No... We need to do something...

Bryony West: Does this mean that there will be many local residents with nowhere to go on Christmas Day?Surely a rota of visiting could be set up so that nobody need be alone all day?

Irene Neumann-Graham: I am sure some local businesses can step in and help?

Carmen CC: I am not sure why people are laying the blame solely with Wiltshire Council. It seems like there were several circumstances that led to the event being cancelled (back in October).

Steve Law: Sad bunch of idiots commenting on this post. The cancellation was announced in October. It is apparent that the scale of the event (it has grown and grown) was beyond the logistical ability of the organising group to put on. It is not a Wiltshire Council event, they only provide the premises.

Tonya Daniells: Wiltshire council where no one matters that's right.

Denise Barrett: I'm sure some one would help supervise the kitchen .

Sarah Ross: Sad to see the decision was made so long ago and only now publicising it, surely they could have reached out and looked for someone when it became clear they needed a supervisor.

Pauline Gingell: Can anyone show kindness I will help if needed.

Steve Dewar: How sad that this issue was not communicated earlier to allow a response from those outside the normal network.

Hilary Bridgman: Typical! They’ve known for months and it’s only made public now. Someone may have stepped forward earlier. Sounds like A political foul up as usual. How selfish, pointless and stupid. I hope those let down so badly can find some Christmas cheer.

Shaun Wilkins: I bet the council own the kitchen and Elior provide the service, so should be up to the council. Looks like somebody playing the H&S card with no justification. Hope the council remember this when the contract comes up for renewal.

Sarah Bec: This is so upsetting! 250 people last year needed this . I know the homeless community will definitely suffer.
