TOPSHOP and Topman in the town centre are both set to close in the next few months.

A staff member told the Adver the shops will shut permanently on March 28.

It is believed that around 13 jobs could be lost.

Here’s what you told us on Facebook….

Stephen Mastin: “Don’t get me wrong, Swindon town centre is dreadful, but Arcadia has been struggling for a long time.”

David Gartside: “It’s not just a problem in Swindon, most high Street’s around the country are having the same problems.”

Francesca-Louise Rowlands: “This isn’t really surprising. Swindon town centre has not been attractive place to shop for a long time, when businesses need to downsize, Swindon is generally the first on their list.

“Regent Circus was built to entice people and look at the state of that now. The only place people really want to go now is the Outlet. A shame but, unless something really drastic is done, people will continue to travel further to places like Bath and Bristol and/or shop online. “

Lee Collie: “Nothing to do with Swindon shopping centre, most of us are shopping online, it’s that simple.”

Marcus Jerome: “The only chance the High Street stand a chance is company’s get together and share retail units and rents.”

Jenny Thomas: “Knock it all down, build a mall or another retail park with parking.

"Town centres are too inconvenient with their atrocious parking fees and as previously said, Swindon Town is not exactly a nice place to hang out on your day off .

“It needs regeneration. At least, if it feels like a nice place to visit, people will pay the parking.”

Thomas Craigie: “What’s troubling in Swindon, is that while these chains are closing nationally, Swindon is always almost included which says a lot about the town centre and those comparable with ours.

“Just a half hour drive from town and the difference is quite stark. The council here has no vision, no clue and no answers.”

Gemma Selling: “From my experience, I’d rather shop in places like the Orbital than the town centre.

"And places like the Orbital and the Outlet make more effort in keeping places clean and tidy.”

Laurie Elizabeth: “I mean unemployment rates are at their lowest since the 70s apparently. No one wants to work and the majority of people who do want to work are offered zero-hour contracts with no benefits and minimum wage, so no one has any money to spend.

“Everything is cheaper online. Why chuck away £50 on a jacket from Top Shop when you can get one offline for 20 quid.

“Parking is also extortionate everywhere in town centre. No wonder no one wants to go there.”

Jordan Drew: “People have less disposable income which means fewer customers in town, so stores have to close down, which gives shoppers less incentive to go to town, which leads to more closures.

"If people had more money to shop with then the stores wouldn’t have to close.”

Karen Andrews: “Sometimes it is cheaper to buy online than it is in the shops. It’s not necessarily because of laziness. More people are having to be careful where they are spending money.”

Denise Reynolds: "I went to Swindon town centre on Monday, what an absolute disaster. I will never ever go there again.”

Julie Clark: “If you don’t encourage the traffic into the town, people won’t use the shops and that results in the closure. About time SBC did something about it.”
