POLICE are searching for a man who is reported to have entered the River Avon near Melksham this afternoon.
Officers are still at the scene of the incident at the Challymead Bridge on the A350.
A police spokesman said: “We were called at 2.20pm following numerous reports expressing concern for the welfare of a man who was believed to have gone into the water from the Challymead Bridge on the A350.
“Both the fire service and the ambulance service were also involved in the initial response but are now standing down with only a police presence remaining at the current time.
“The A350 has not been closed, but there may be delays. If anyone has any information which could assist our enquiries please call us on 101, quoting log 178 of today.”
