FIVE tutors at Swindon College have received top marks – from their students.

The college at North Star Avenue has been recognised by the Teaching Excellence Framework, earning a prestigious silver award.

The government assessment recognises stand-out teaching in universities and colleges and is geared towards helping students choose where to study.

David Panes, the programme leader for the foundation degree in health and social care at the college, achieved a satisfaction rate above 90 per cent in the National Student Survey.

He has worked at Swindon College for six years.

Dave said: “It has made me feel very proud, everyone puts blood, sweat and tears into what they do.

“Some students won’t go to university but this gives them the opportunity to get a degree and the knowledge if they want it.

“For all of us to be recognised here and outside of Swindon College, it’s really great.”

Foundation degree early years leader Angela Batner scored a 100 per cent satisfaction rate.

She said: “We’re very proud to receive these awards and hopefully this reflects in our students’ success.

“It’s nice to see all the hard work we put in is reflected in that and knowing we’re doing right by the students. Their voice has said it all really.”

Tracey Canham, a tutor for the foundation degree educational practice, also scored more than 90 per cent.

She told the Adver: “I was a bit excited to get the award, it’s the second one we have so it just shows we’re meeting the standards.

“It’s very inspirational that we’re doing the job well and that we engage with the students.

"It just makes you feel very proud that we’re actually providing a service and qualification needed for the students.”

She thinks keeping the college modern is what helps it to be successful.

Tracey said: “The course has developed over time, we all have our specialist subject and we’re constantly doing research to make sure it’s fit for purpose.

"We’re constantly progressing with the times. We have to move with them because otherwise our courses aren’t fit for purpose.”

Graphic design leader David Caton and Richard Starzecki of illustration also achieved more than 90 per cent.

The NSS has been running for 15 years and asks students questions about their course.

The national benchmark for the survey is 84.63 per cent.

Swindon College will be hosting a higher education event next Thursday between 5 and 7pm.
