A group that helps the homeless has suspended its activities amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The Filling Station has stopped its support for rough sleepers to ensure the safety of clients and volunteers.

The group, which hands out food and other essentials, has operated every Thursday night for over 20 years. It supports 50 homeless people or those at risk of homelessness each week.

Trustee Angus Macpherson said “The trustees have had to make this decision based on national advice. We know that many of the clients have underlying health problems, and bringing them together in not a responsible approach.

"We very much hope that we will see a strong response from Swindon Borough Council, with a strategic plan to support this section of our community.”
